Use Pendar in Claude and ChatGPT

Pendar's research tools check citations and map the published literature from inside your AI assistant. They connect through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) at https://pendar.ai/mcp and run on your Pendar account.

The tools

Every tool only reads the public scholarly record. None of them can see or change anything in your Pendar account.

ToolCost per call
Verify a citation verify_paper Verify that a cited paper actually exists and return its canonical metadata, DOI, and retraction status. 1 credit
Trace a paper's citation impact graph_hopper Walk the citation graph around a paper and assess its impact: who cited it, what it cited, and how those papers connect to each other. 1 credit
Survey a research field survey_literature Survey the published literature on a topic and return the shape of the field alongside the most relevant papers. 1 credit
Check a reference list audit_bibliography Check a whole reference list against the published record in one call: for each reference, whether the paper exists, whether it is retracted, whether the citation's details match, or whether it cannot be confirmed. 1–5 credits, by list length
Profile a researcher profile_researcher Summarise a researcher's published work from the public publication record: the topics they publish on and which are growing, where they publish, papers and citations per year, affiliations as they appear on papers, and frequent co-authors. 1 credit
Find journals for a topic find_venues Find the journals and other venues that publish a research topic, ranked by how many papers on it each one carries, with whether that is growing. 1 credit

Connect from Claude

  1. In Claude, open Settings → Connectors.
  2. Find Pendar in the connector directory, or choose Add custom connector, name it Pendar, and enter https://pendar.ai/mcp.
  3. Click Connect. Sign in to Pendar (or create an account), review the tools and prices, and approve.
  4. In a chat, turn Pendar on from the tools menu. Claude decides when a tool helps; naming Pendar in your request makes that explicit.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner may need to add the connector for the organization first.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http pendar https://pendar.ai/mcp

Then run /mcp in Claude Code and choose Pendar to sign in. The approval screen will say it returns you to localhost; that is Claude Code on your computer receiving the sign-in.

Connect from ChatGPT

  1. Find Pendar in ChatGPT's plugin directory and open it.
  2. Choose Connect, sign in to Pendar, review the tools and prices, and approve.
  3. Ask a research question in a chat, or start it with “Use Pendar”.

Things to ask

Account and credits

You need a Pendar account. Each tool call spends credits from your Pendar balance at the prices above, and the approval screen shows the same prices and your balance before you connect. A call that fails is not charged. If a call would cost more than your balance, the tool says so and nothing is charged. See pricing to add credits.

What Pendar receives

Only what the assistant sends in a tool call: the tool's name and its arguments, such as a citation, DOI, title, topic, or researcher name. Pendar does not receive your conversation, your files, or anything from your other connectors. We record each call (tool, time, outcome, credits) for billing. The privacy policy covers what we keep and for how long.
